Catherine Palace and Amber Room

I always wanted to visit the palace of Catherine the Great and her Amber Room in the village of Pushkin, outside of St. Petersburg, and in January 2020 this became a reality. When I first visited St. Pete in 2000, they had a restoration gongoing on, but now the palace is mostly finished.

Moscow was adorned with lights and it seemed like the whole city was out in the streets. We stayed in the center near the Kremlin at an Airbnb flat located in the House of Composers, a remnant from Soviet times. One of the highlights of our time in Moscow was a performance at the New Stage of Bolshoy Theater.

Moscow Metro

Moscow Metro was once called the Eighth Wonder of the World by National Geographic magazine. Many of the Inner Ring stations compare to fine art galleries, each one with a different theme.

Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg

St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia, the old imperial capital built by Peter the Great. The center is entirely comprised of 18th century palaces, ornate churches, and imperial ministries dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Among my favorite buildings is Dom Knigi—House of Books—which takes up most of an ornate palace.

The Hermitage

The Hermitage

If you ever go to Saint Petersburg, Russia, you have to go to the Hermitage, second only to the Louvre in Paris as an art museum. This was my third trip to this city and my third visit to the Hermitage. It is as spectacular now as it was 20 years ago.
